The Central Bank of Cyprus has today released the statistics on interest rates applied by monetary financial institutions in Cyprus on deposits and loans in euro as well as data regarding volumes (amounts) of new euro denominated loans for the reference month of February 2019.These statistics are included in the March 2019 edition of Monetary and Financial Statistics. The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) was established in 1963, shortly after Cyprus gained its independence, in accordance with the Central Bank of Cyprus Law, 1963 and the relevant articles of the Constitution. Today the CBC is governed by the Central Bank of Cyprus Law, 2002 as amended (hereafter “the CBC Law”). The Bank’s Base rates are linked to the average interest rate paid on euro-denominated household deposits in the Republic of Cyprus (outstanding amounts) by euro area residents with agreed maturities of up to 2 years as published on the website of the Central Bank of Cyprus on a monthly basis [1] (‘the CBC benchmark rate’). The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) was established in 1963, shortly after Cyprus gained its independence, in accordance with the Central Bank of Cyprus Law, 1963 and the relevant articles of the Constitution. Today the CBC is governed by the Central Bank of Cyprus Law, 2002 as amended (hereafter “the CBC Law”). In our November newsletter reference was made to an amendment of the Criminal Code which made it an offence to provide loans with an interest rate which exceeds the reference rate as determined by the Central Bank of Cyprus. Today the reference rate set by the Central bank of Cyprus is set at 12,57% per annum and it is reviewed quarterly.

The Central Bank of Cyprus, exercising its power under article 314A of the Cyprus Penal Code, Cap. 154 as subsequently amended, has calculated, in accordance with the provisions of the said article, the reference interest rate at 8,62%.
